A 21st-century educational system must educate all students in the effective and authentic use of the technologies that permeate society to prepare them for the future. In the past, our educational system emphasized the use of traditional tools such as textbooks, chalkboards, overhead projectors, ring binders, and composition books. Now, however, our culture has embraced vastly new and dynamically changing media in everyday life.
When discussing literacy or education, there must always be a digital element. As networked, digital technologies and practices will always change, educators need opportunities to empower students as they explore, connect, and create online.
Initiate means to teach someone about an area of knowledge, or bring into a community of practice. It is also an opportunity to introduce, or instruct others in the rudiments or principles of something.
The InitiatED Project by the Initiative for Literacy in a Digital Age will work with educators and learners to study what it means to be digitally literate, and amplify this work with the community.
